20x20 | Preparing climate and sustainability entrepreneurs
The "Innovation for Climate and Sustainability" class at Stanford is inspiring the next generation of environmental entrepreneurs. This unique course encourages students to tackle urgent climate challenges using entrepreneurial principles, turning innovative ideas into real-world solutions.
Co-taught by Woods Senior Fellows Chris Field and Rob Dunbar, Woods Programs Director Brian Sharbono, and Steve Weinstein and Radhika Malpani, adjunct faculty in management sciences and engineering and the Earth systems program, the class equips students with the skills to create startups that address climate change and sustainability issues.
Among the startups to emerge from the class are Terradot and Revivo. Terradot is focused on accelerating silicate’s natural weathering cycle to capture and permanently store carbon in a cost-effective, scalable way that enhances agricultural soil. Revivo sources high quality components to enable greater electronics repair in Africa, beginning in Kenya. Other teams have worked to expand the use of prescribed burns, better enable small and medium cities to secure federal resiliency grants, extract lithium from oil and gas brines and streamline permitting for renewable energy companies.
The course emphasizes a hands-on, problem-solving approach, encouraging students to ground scientific insight in what can be made practical, identified by each team meeting with more than 100 external stakeholders and industry experts to discover and develop impactful solutions. This interdisciplinary, externally focused model has been key to the success of the startups emerging from the class, as students learn to integrate scientific research with entrepreneurial strategies.
"(Innovation) for Climate and Sustainability showed us the importance of blending scientific rigor with practical implementation," said Terradot cofounder Sasankh Munukutla. "By the end of the class, we had not only developed a deep understanding of carbon removal but also had a clear plan for how to measure, report, and verify the impact of our work."
By equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to create innovative solutions, the course is shaping the future of sustainability and demonstrating the power of entrepreneurial thinking in the fight against climate change.
