20x20 | Empowering local leaders for sustainable development
The Stanford Environmental Leadership and Language (SELAL) program is addressing critical environmental and social challenges in Costa Rica's Osa and Golfito region. This innovative program empowers local leaders to drive sustainable development and conservation efforts in their communities.
The Osa and Golfito region, known for its rich biodiversity and natural resources, faces significant challenges in balancing economic development with environmental preservation. Traditional top-down approaches to conservation and development often fail to engage local communities effectively, leading to unsustainable practices and missed opportunities for positive change.
SELAL, developed as part of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment’s Osa & Golfito Initiative, takes a unique approach by focusing on capacity building and leadership development within local communities. To address community concerns about the lack of leadership and English language skills needed for gainful employment particularly in the ecotourism industry, the economic motor of the region, SELAL provides comprehensive training in sustainable development principles, project management, and leadership skills. Participants, known as SELAListas, learn to identify local needs, develop innovative solutions, and implement projects that benefit both their communities and the environment.
With support from Woods and local partners, SELAL has evolved from a pilot program to a transformative force in the region. The initiative has trained multiple cohorts of local leaders, each contributing to a growing network of change-makers in the Osa and Golfito region.
Field projects led by SELAListas have demonstrated the program's impact on local communities and ecosystems. These initiatives range from sustainable agriculture and ecotourism ventures to waste management improvements and environmental education programs. As per the original vision for SELAL, the program is now fully managed and funded by Costa Ricans, with Stanford experts serving in advisory roles.
