Civil and Environmental Engineering Focus Areas: community trust in water supply, Environmental Justice

Yulitzi Vizcarra is a graduate student in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University, focusing on addressing tap water distrust in underserved communities. Her research combines community-generated data and infrastructure analysis to explore the socio-economic impacts of water quality perceptions. Through partnerships with organizations like Nuestra Casa and We the People of Detroit, she works with residents using interviews, surveys, and water sampling to enhance trust in tap water and address systemic inequities in water access.

Yulitzi holds a B.S. in Environmental Engineering Science from UC Berkeley (2023). Her past work includes investigating microbial risks in Direct Potable Reuse (DPR) systems to develop safe water management practices. She also studied particulate emissions from asphalt plants, highlighting their environmental justice impacts on air and water quality, and advocating for stricter regulatory measures to protect vulnerable communities. Additionally, Yulitzi led the 3D Printer Filament Reclamation Project at UC Berkeley, developing a closed-loop recycling system to reduce waste and promote sustainability in engineering.

By integrating technical expertise with social science insights, Yulitzi’s work develops scalable, community-driven solutions to improve water infrastructure, enhance public health, and advance water equity.
