Jordyn Wolfand

RELP Cohort: 2017
Civil & Environmental Engineering
School: Engineering

Jordyn (Jordy) Wolfand is a Civil & Environmental Engineering PhD student researching methods for stormwater management to meet water quality standards. Working with Professor Dick Luthy and the Engineering Research Center for Re-Inventing the Nations Urban Water Infrastructure (ReNUWIt). Jordy currently models how stormwater best management practices (BMPs) can be improved and optimized to reduce bacteria loading in Los Angeles. Her research is motivated by stormwaters negative impact on human and environmental health and the opportunity for stormwater to play a larger role in drinking water supply in arid climates.

Jordy grew up in Maryland, where the Chesapeake Bay sparked her interest in water issues. She got involved in research in high school where, with a partnership at the University of Maryland she looked at how synthetic estrogens may impact fish behavior. Her research led her to become a finalist in the U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize in 2007. Jordy continued to pursue this interest at Tufts University, where she earned a B.S. in Environmental Engineering. She conducted undergraduate research looking at how nanoparticles are transported in the subsurface. Outside of the classroom, she was a coxswain for Tufts Womens Crew and a mentor in the Student-Teacher Outreach Mentorship Program (STOMP), which brought engineering curricula into K-12 classrooms. After graduating Tufts, Jordy worked for Geosyntec, a global environmental engineering consulting firm where she gained experience in stormwater modeling and using smart systems for water management.

At Stanford, Jordy is a Woods Institute Goldman Graduate Fellow, treasurer for the ReNUWIt student leadership committee, and a tutor in the East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutoring program.
