Bibek Paudel

Bibek Paudel is a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, personalized medicine and planetary health. His research has focused on developing machine learning and statistical models to solve problems that are interdisciplinary in nature, including those from the biomedical, ecological and socio-political sciences. Prior to joining Stanford, Bibek received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, where he led research projects on building robust machine learning models for personalization systems and social and information networks.

Bibek’s ongoing research aims at developing novel data-driven models by utilizing large datasets of health observations at both the cellular and population levels. In his most recent work, he is utilizing large datasets of biological and health observations as well as environmental variables to determine the health effects of exposure to air pollution from wildfire smoke. From single-cell observations to large-scale population health data, his research spans both ends of the biomedical data-science spectrum. Bibek is leading collaborations with three schools at Stanford: Engineering, Earth Sciences and Medicine. He is particularly interested in understanding how these research findings can guide mitigation and prevention strategies for the health impacts brought about by climate-extremes. Bibek would also like to continue his current work towards making these AI solutions fairer and more diverse, as well as to inform them through interdisciplinary dialogues and collaborations with relevant stake holders.
