John Openshaw

John Openshaw is a postdoctoral researcher in the division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine. He is interested in the emergence of new infectious diseases and the anthropologic, social, and political forces that drive emergence.

He has recently designed and implemented a surveillance platform for emerging infectious diseases that is currently running throughout Bangladesh. He hopes to use data from this new platform to better understand the ecology of emergence and how threats from novel infectious diseases can be mitigated.

Prior to becoming an infectious disease fellow, he completed his training in internal medicine at Stanford University Hospital and worked on the ecology of Rickettsial diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He holds a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, a masters of science in biology from the University of Oxford, and undergraduate degrees in biology and political science from Stanford University. In his spare time he enjoys backpacking, windsurfing, and playing the mandolin.
