Request for Proposals for Emerging Environmental Scholar Research Awards from the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment

The Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment is pleased to make available funds to support direct costs (non-fellowship, non-tuition, e.g.,) for PhD dissertation research by students at Stanford. Requests for an Emerging Environmental Scholar Research Award, to offset up to $5,000 in direct expenses for doctoral dissertation research will be considered from qualified PhD students in any Stanford department.  PhD students qualified to apply have advanced to candidacy in their departments and are working dissertation research closely in line with the Woods Institute objectives of advancing Thriving Ecosystems on Land and in the Ocean, Human and Planetary Health, Natural Climate Solutions and Climate Change Adaptation. The dissertation research may be focused on advance of fundamental understanding, predictive models and actionable knowledge, and/or development of new technology.

Funding: Applicants should be judicious in their requests (can be for less than $5,000) for funds for direct costs associated with their dissertations.

Eligibility: 

Any Stanford PhD student (all Schools and Departments eligible) who has advanced to candidacy is working on dissertation research closely in line with the Woods Institute's objectives of advancing Thriving Ecosystems on Land and in the Ocean, Human and Planetary Health, Natural Climate Solutions and Climate Change Adaptation. The dissertation research may be focused on advance of fundamental understanding, predictive models and actionable knowledge, and/or development of new technology.

Maximum funding amount: $5000

How can the funds be used? 

Examples of allowable expenditures include purchase of data sets, travel to a research site for data collection, and interview and survey-related expenses, materials and supplies, key software, leasing of computing time, sensors and other minor equipment.    Requests for funds to toward capital expenditures, research staff and assistants, travel to conferences, publication fees, tuition or other academic fees, student stipends and fellowship support will not be considered.
