This brief is intended to provide new research findings that analyze the depths of hydraulic fracturing and water use across the United States, including the shallowest wells. It compares the prevalence of the practice across U.S. states, offers examples of best-practices from existing regulations on well depth, and provides policymakers with data upon which to base decisions in the interest of public and environmental health and safety.
