Shinnosuke Nakayama
Originally trained as a marine ecologist, Shin is an interdisciplinary researcher whose passion revolves around solving pressing ocean issues through his expertise in data analysis and statistics. Prior to joining the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions, he worked on a wide range of research topics, including animal group behavior, telemetry, citizen science, gun violence research, and human—computer interactions. With his unique background, he currently seeks innovative solutions for ocean problems, with particular interest in applications of analytical tools that help us elucidate causal relationships in complex systems, as well as novel technologies that enable us to collect unprecedented data to address ocean issues.
Shin received his Ph.D. in Marine Science at the University of Texas at Austin, where his research focused on social behavior and its implication to life history in coastal fish. After receiving his Ph.D., he gained international postdoctoral training at University of Cambridge (UK), Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (Germany), and New York University. When not analyzing data, he enjoys walking in nature and taking care of his indoor plants.
