Julia Mason

Julia is a PhD student in Biology at Stanfords Hopkins Marine Station. Her work in Larry Crowders lab is interdisciplinary, examining social and ecological resilience in small-scale fisheries in Peru. She is interested in the role of oceans and fisheries in food security for developing countries, the social impacts of conservation policies, and engaging diverse stakeholders in the scientific process.

Julia received her A.B. in Environmental Science and Public Policy with a secondary in Organismal and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard College, where she graduated summa cum laude. She was selected as the 2013 Our World Underwater Scholarship Society National Park Service dive research intern, and worked on over 25 diving and marine science projects in nine different National Parks. Following that, she lived for five months in Palau, conducting volunteer research at the Palau International Coral Reef Center as a Pforzheimer Foundation Public Service Fellow.

She is an active member of Stanfords AAUS scientific dive program and an avid underwater photographer. She volunteers at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History and is working to develop sustainable seafood and ocean literacy curricula for Monterey and Salinas high schools.
