In 1892 Stanford opened the Hopkins Seaside Laboratory, the oldest marine lab on the west coast and third oldest in the country. In 1973 the Stanford Board of Trustees formally designated Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve--several areas of which have been excavated by Stanford archaeologists in collaboration with the Muwekma-Ohlone since the 1890s--as a biological preserve. The Stanford Historical Society 39th Annual Members’ Meeting features speakers Philippe Cohen, Executive Director of Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve and Stephen Palumbi, Jane and Marshall Steel Jr. Professor in Marine Sciences and Director of the Hopkins Marine Station discussing the history and formation of two of Stanford's premier field research stations. RSVP is required to attend the talk (see Register link in sidebar); attendance at the pre-talk meeting and reception is limited to SHS members.
