President Xi Jinping of China is famously quoted as saying, “Clear waters and lush mountains are gold and silver.  We will not trade them for gold or silver.”  In 2012, he led that country's Communist Party in declaring China’s Dream:  creating the ecological civilization of the 21st Century.

Learn more about efforts to realize that goal in a conversation with China's new Deputy Director of the National Development and Reform Commission, Qiang Ma.  He is visiting Stanford with a delegation of national and provincial government officials working to design a “green financial system” in collaboration with the Natural Capital Project.  The transformation is well underway with a system of accounting for nature, including a new metric to go alongside GDP, called the "Gross Ecosystem Product."

Stanford Professors Gretchen Daily and Chris Field will join Ma for the conversation, to be held on campus August 2.
