Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the Ward W. and Priscilla B. Woods Institute for the Environment harnesses the expertise and imagination of Stanford University scholars to develop practical solutions to the environmental challenges facing the planet-from climate change to sustainable agriculture to conservation. To achieve these goals, the Institute brings together prominent scholars and leaders from business, government and the non-profit sector through a series of Uncommon Dialogues and Strategic Collaborations designed to produce pragmatic results that inform decision makers.
With more than 340 affiliated faculty members from a wide range of disciplines across Stanford, the Woods Institute serves as the hub of interdisciplinary environmental research, teaching and problem solving at Stanford, in that role, the Woods Institute maintains the Stanford Environmental Portal, a resource for campus-wide environmental research and education.
Research at Woods focuses on four core areas:
In 2004, the Institute launched the Environmental Venture Projects program, which provides seed funding to interdisciplinary teams of Stanford faculty for innovative research that leads to pragmatic results in one or more of the four core areas.
To educate and inspire environmental leaders, the institute sponsors unique educational programs for students and teachers, and supports leadership training programs for faculty at Stanford and other institutions.
