Undergraduate Research Program - Woods Institute

The Woods Institute for the Environment is pleased to provide full- and part-time student stipends to Stanford undergraduates to conduct interdisciplinary environmental research for summer 2012. Faculty are welcome to apply on behalf of undergraduates at all levels and from all departments. Funding priority goes to Woods Institute fellows, lecturers and affiliated faculty. Students wishing to initiate a project will need to approach a faculty member who is willing to apply on the student's behalf.

Students who participate as researchers in the program are required to:

  1. Enroll in a two-credit course on Interdisciplinary Research Survival Skills (EARTHSYS 177) in spring term.
  2. Participate in the Symposia of Undergraduate Research and Public Service (SURPS) by submitting an abstract and creating a poster.
  3. Participate in one poster session at a Woods Institute event in the following academic year.
  4. Fill out a program evaluation at the midpoint and end of the program.
  5. Attend a weekly lunch seminar series during the summer term (when on campus) that will include lectures by faculty and workshops on poster-making and oral presentations. The class is in conjunction with the School of Earth Sciences and the Woods Institute for the Environment.

Faculty mentors are required to:

  1. Meet at least every other week with the undergraduate mentor to advise and adjust the work plan as needed.
  2. Participate by giving a talk in the summer lunch program or participate as an advisor in the spring course if invited by Woods Institute Senior Fellow Terry Root, who chairs the program.
  3. At the beginning of the spring quarter, mentors will meet as a group with Professor Root to discuss goals, success stories, an overview of the program, and questions or concerns.
  4. Attend a dinner for faculty mentors and undergraduate researchers

Faculty Applications:

Faculty applications will describe the interdisciplinary research planned, the names of the various experts involved in the project with whom the student could interact, the tasks the undergraduate will perform, what the student will glean from the work and the qualifications needed by the student. Faculty are encouraged to nominate an undergraduate. If they cannot, the Woods Institute will assists them in identifying several potential applicants, and the faculty mentor will make the selection. Maximum funding for summer 2012 is $5,600. The Woods Institute encourages faculty to cost-share when possible to accommodate additional students in the program.

The application deadline is March 5, 2012.
