Jeffrey Koseff

Perry L. McCarty Director of the Woods Institute

Jeff Koseff focuses on the interaction between physical and biological systems in natural aquatic environments, and in particular on turbulence and internal wave dynamics in stratified flows, transport and mixing in estuarine systems, phytoplankton dynamics in estuarine systems, coral reef and kelp-forest hydrodynamics, chemical sensing in the marine environment, and coastal upwelling processes. Long-term research projects include understanding the transport of mass and energy in estuarine systems such as San Francisco Bay, and understanding how the coral reef systems of the Red Sea and Hawaii and the kelp forest systems of California function. More recently, at the 2011 Civil and Environmental Engineering graduation ceremony, Koseff received the Eugene L. Grant Award for teaching in recognition of "his continued dedication and excellence in teaching as voted by the students of the Department." Eugene Grant was a long-serving and highly distinguished member of the faculty at Stanford. The award was established by his students to honor his contributions. Koseff also received the Grant Award in 1995.

Barton H. ‘Buzz’ Thompson

Professor Thompson's research focuses on the sustainable use of natural resources and the effective reform of regulatory institutions. The author of several books on water, the environment, and property, Professor Thompson has published articles on such diverse topics as water markets, fisheries management, biodiversity protection, land conservation, the use of economics and market tools in environmental regulation, and cognitive barriers to resource management.

Debbie Drake Dunne

Debbie Drake Dunne serves as the Executive Director of the Woods Institute for the Environment. In this role, she works closely with the faculty co-directors to develop and implement the Institute's vision and strategic direction. Debbie is also responsible for designing strategies and programs that link the Woods Institute and Stanford environmental researchers with external audiences to increase the relevance and impact of their research. Debbie joined the Woods Institute in 2005 as Executive Director of the Leopold Leadership Program.

Before joining the Woods Institute, Debbie served in a variety of NGO and government roles including Director of Government Relations for The Nature Conservancy in California and Assistant Secretary of Conservation Programs for the California Resources Agency. She was responsible for developing policy and securing funding to support major environmental initiatives such as restoration of the Everglades and San Francisco Bay. Debbie has devoted the last twenty years of her career working across a broad range of sectors to inform decision-making and strengthen environmental policies and management practices. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from the University of South Carolina.

Luis Tam

Luis Tam is the Associate Director of Finance and Administration at the Woods Institute for the Environment. Luis works to provide strategic planning, financial management, performance dashboards, and research administration for the Institute and its programs.

Luis is trained and skilled in major areas of health care executive management, primarily in new business development and operational improvements in a wide range of settings. His experience included clinical and academic areas of Clinical Laboratories, Pathology, Emergency Medicine, Clinical Neurophysiology, Nuclear Medicine, Pulmonary Function, and Ambulatory Clinics.

Prior to joining the Woods Institute, Luis was the Assistant Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development at UCLA Health Systems in West Los Angeles. Previously, he has been the Director of Finance for Pathology and the Clinical Laboratories for Stanford Hospital and Clinics. He has a strong interest in environmental issues. He has traveled extensively around the world and led natural history tours to Africa and the Galapagos. He holds a MBA in Finance from Colorado Technical University and a Bachelors of Science degree in Microbiology from San Jose State University.

Paula Wetzel

Paula is the Research Administration Manager in the Woods Institute. In this role, she has worked with faculty and staff on interdisciplinary environmental faculty research and other sponsored research projects. She brings valuable knowledge of university research grant process as well as proposal submissions to NSF and NIH.

Paula's previous Stanford experience was with the successful GP-B program and with the Stanford investment management group. She also has experience in finance and accounting positions with Silicon Valley Fortune 500 companies and high tech startups.

Paula's interest in health and the environment was piqued early in life raising crops with her mother, who was an avid organic gardener. The connection between health, food and the environment was further strengthened while completing an internship at Stanford's Children's Hospital working with patients in pediatric oncology and cystic fibrosis.

Prior to joining Woods Keith spent 10 years as the VP of IT for a silicon valley firm that provided securities history information and services to Wall St. There he built the entire IT function for the company - systems, data center, databases, network. Prior to this he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer for 3 1/2 years in the West African country of Niger. While serving as a volunteer he built a cooperative pharmacy, grain and cereal cooperatives, installed speed bumps in a nearby market town and opened regional offices for Peace Corps in the far reaches of the country. He is an avid trail/distance runner. Keith graduated from UCLA with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Business Administration.

Wendy Millet serves as Associate Director of Programs for the Woods Institute for the Environment where she is responsible for developing and implementing uncommon dialogues, education and environmental leadership programs.

Before joining the Woods Institute, Wendy worked for 12 years at The Nature Conservancy where she served in a variety of leadership roles including Director of the Pacific Salmon Ecosystems Program and Associate State Director for California. She has worked at numerous conservation organizations including The Conservation Fund and California's Natural Resources Agency. She currently serves on the board of the California Council of Land Trusts and the Advisory Council of Save the Redwoods League.

Wendy's passion for conservation and connecting people with nature began while she was running a dude ranch in Wyoming. More recently, she co-founded Gallop Ventures a company that helps leaders, teams, and individuals find their "leadership stride" through interactions with horses and nature.

She holds a B.A. in Literature from Harvard and studied Environmental Economics at the University of Washington and Environmental Planning at University of Virginia.

Pam's interest in communication for public engagement began with a two-year stay in France, where she was inspired by the vigorous public conversations she heard there. On returning to the San Francisco Bay Area, she spent five years as a newspaper reporter and editor covering local government, schools, and a range of environmental and resource issues. She later became the executive officer of the San Francisquito Watershed Council, a diverse nonprofit stakeholder group that engages and educates the community about watershed science for sound resource planning. As the executive director of the Leopold Leadership Program, she seeks ways to support Fellows undertaking outreach initiatives in a changing media and policy landscape. Pam also volunteers as a community mediator with the Palo Alto Mediation Program. She graduated from Yale College with a B.A. in English literature and environmental history.

Margaret has dedicated her career to designing educational programs that draw on real-world scenarios to promote change. Based at Stanford University's Woods Institute for the Environment, Margaret coordinates the Center for Ocean Solution's graduate marine education initiative - MARINE. Margaret also currently works with Stanford's Aldo Leopold Leadership Program, designing program modules for leadership, communications, policy and partnering, that enable academic environmental researchers to be effective leaders and communicators. Prior to joining the Leopold Leadership Program, Margaret managed two Stanford training grants to design new learning environments that integrated technology to support teaching and learning (STEP and SimTecT). At Stanford University Medical Media & Information Technologies (SUMMIT), she planned multiple training events, including facilitating a live surgery broadcast between Stanford clinicians and surgical residents in Sydney, Australia.

Margaret's interest in teaching and learning developed while she was an undergraduate in innovative study programs at Earlham College and evolved further when she became a teacher designing a "school without walls" in Philadelphia. This background inspired her future work in developing programs to bring research and innovation to new audiences in diverse settings - from an early childhood research center in New Haven, Connecticut to Cisco Systems in Silicon Valley.

Eiko Rutherford

Eiko Rutherford is the Program Associate for the Leopold Leadership Program. She provides administrative support for the Leopold Leadership Program, a leadership training program for academic environmental scientists.

Before joining Woods, Eiko worked in the international exchange field such as the Stanford Overseas Studies Program in Kyoto and an NPO promoting relations between Virginia and Japan. She also has several volunteer experiences in the field. As a volunteer translator, she took part in the translation project for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Alliance's newsletters for COP10 held in Japan in 2010, and has been involved in the Japan for Sustainability website to help introducing Japanese environmental activities to the world.

Steve is Executive Director of the Energy and Environment Affiliates Program at Stanford University, where he is responsible for developing and managing interactions for corporations and other organizations having an interest in Stanford's research, faculty, and graduate students in energy-related and environmental fields. Steve brings to this position a background in renewable energy, business, technology, and finance. Previously, Steve was President and CEO of Cyrium Technologies, a solar energy startup company, and a consultant and advisor to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy. Before that, Steve was a venture capitalist at Worldview Technology Partners where he emphasized investments in semiconductors, displays, lighting, and energy. Steve was also Vice President at SDL (JDSU) where he managed businesses in telecommunications, printing, optical amplifiers, and industrial lasers. He began his career as a research scientist at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. Steve received a PhD and MS from Stanford University, and a BS from the University of California at Berkeley, all in Electrical Engineering. He has more than 40 papers published in peer-reviewed journals and four patents, and is a fellow of the SPIE and a member of the IEEE and OSA. Steve is a member of the City of Palo Alto Utilities Advisory Commission and is involved in humanitarian projects such as the Tech Museum Awards for Technology Benefiting Humanity and the Global Social Benefit Incubator at Santa Clara University.
