The goal of this Uncommon Dialogue is to develop a collaborative group of scholars and practitioners focused on the linkages between urbanization and land-use change, water and waste management, and public health in peri-urban zones of sub-Saharan Africa. Employing a workshop format, the event brought together individuals from a diversity of disciplines, organizations and backgrounds to create opportunities for new ideas and research directions to emerge.

The workshop held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, July 2-3, 2009, was organized around five themes:

• The Context. Land-use change, growth and development in the rural-urban fringe.
• The Supply Side. Institutional challenges and innovations in water and waste management in peri-urban zones.
• Infrastructure and Health. Technical challenges and innovations in water and waste management in peri-urban zones.
• The Demand Side. Understanding peri-urban households in sub-Saharan Africa.
• Developing a Research Agenda.
