Groundwater Dialogue

Sponsored by the Woods Institute for the Environment
December 5, 2008

On behalf of Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University, we are delighted that you plan to participate in the dialog on "Challenges to, Solutions for, and Research Directions in Aquifer Depletion and Salinization." The dialog will take place on Friday, December 5th, 2008 at Stanford University, with a welcome dinner Thursday night, December 4.

This dialog will be a central activity of a project to evaluate potential solutions for and novel approaches to sustainable use of aquifers. At the dialogue we aim to examine global challenges to groundwater depletion and salinization and the obstacles to developing effective solutions, with the aim of developing a research agenda that contributes to developing solutions to groundwater use. Sessions will focus on these topics, and each will include a short panel presentation followed by a lengthy discussion with extensive participation by all attendees.

The agenda for the program and the participant list are attached. Directions to the hotel, restaurant, and campus are attached, along with links to local area and campus maps. We will provide a shuttle from the hotel to the dinner and conference site on December 4 and 5. For those who are driving directly to campus on December 5, a block of parking spots will be reserved for your use. If the parking area fills, we will provide you with a parking permit once you arrive on campus. Attire is business casual. If you have any dietary restrictions or require a vegetarian meal, please contact Brenda Pascual, . If you have not yet responded to the survey, your thoughts are important to us, so please send your responses to the attached survey questions to Brenda Pascual at your earliest convenience. We look forward to working with you on this important project.

Because funding is limited, we are grateful to those who are able to cover their own travel expenses. We will, however, reimburse hotel and coach airfare for those participants who cannot cover their own travel expenses. If you need a hotel room, please contact the Stanford Guest House, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, as soon as possible, and let them know you are with the Groundwater group. To make reservations, please call the hotel directly at (650) 926-2800, 2575 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park CA 94025-7015. We will provide dinner on the 4th and breakfast and lunch on the 5th for all participants.

Sincerely,
