OVERVIEW AND MISSION

The Affiliates Program for the Ward W. and Priscilla B. Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute for Energy is a partnership among member corporations and Stanford University. The program supports advanced research, policy study, outreach, and education across a broad range of issues at the intersection of energy and environmental science, technology, and policy. A major challenge of the 21st century is the well being of people today and in the future, with respect to water, food, energy, shelter and other resources. At the same time, the life support systems of the earth must be sustained. We seek to foster working solutions to the world's major energy and environmental challenges, while educating the next generation of leaders in creative interdisciplinary problem solving.

Organizationally, the Woods Institute and the Precourt Institute are part of Stanford's Initiative on the Environment and Sustainability, which reaches into all seven schools. Affiliates program leadership is provided by the directors of the Institutes: Professors Jeff Koseff of the School of Engineering and Barton H. 'Buzz' Thompson of the Law School (the Woods Institute), and Jim Sweeney and John P. Weyant of the School of Engineering (the Precourt Institute).
