Nearly 60 people attended the Woods Institute's Sustainable Built Environment Town Hall on Oct. 5, 2007 . Participants discussed innovative ideas for research that promotes the construction and renovation of cities, buildings and infrastructure in a manner that is economically, environmentally and socially sustainable.

In April 2008, the Woods Institute invited Stanford faculty members to submit proposals for planning grants to develop long-term research agendas related to the sustainable built environment (SBE). Proposals were reviewed by the SBE faculty planning committee led by Woods Senior Fellow Ray Levitt, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Doug McAdam, a professor of sociology.
In May 2008, the SBE planning committee agreed to fund three faculty proposals. The following three interdisciplinary projects will receive a total of $157,500 over the next 10 months:
