Solar Water Delivery
In the driest regions of Africa, water is often hauled long distances by hand.
Stanford researcher Jennifer Burney discusses the EVP solar project in Benin.
During the dry season, women and young girls frequently haul water for several hours each day in an attempt to hand-water small plots of vegetables. The Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) has a better idea: use eco-friendly solar power to pump freshwater to villages. But is solar sustainable in remote rural areas, and will it allow farming to flourish while remaining carbon neutral? To find out, the Woods Institute awarded an EVP grant to Stanford's Food Security and the Environment (FSE) program.
