Meg Caldwell's current research and teaching focuses on coastal law and policy, land use management and decision-making, the use of science in environmental and marine resource policy development and implementation, and developing private and public incentives for natural resource conservation. Appointed to the California Coastal Commission by Governor Schwarzenegger in May 2004, she now serves as its chairperson. Caldwell is also a member of the California Coastal Conservancy Board and the California Marine Life Protection Act Blue Ribbon Task Force.
