Luthy's area of teaching and research is environmental engineering and water quality, including physicochemical processes with application to sustainable practices and the elimination of emerging contaminants and remediation of contaminated sediments. His work addresses the fate of hydrophobic organic compounds and interdisciplinary approaches to understand the behavior and bioavailability of organic contaminants and the application of these approaches to environmental quality criteria and new cleanup practices. He is a past chair of the National Research Council's Water Science and Technology Board and has severed on several NRC Committees on contaminants in soils and sediments. He is a Past-President of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
